Poetry in public space
Post St. Joost, Breda 2004, Maarten Verweij
Tribes descend on Breda.
Every city has its boulevard. A wide, usually tree-lined ribbon of road connecting destinations. The term itself suggests strolling, even loitering, in contrast to 'thoroughfare', which suggests speed, or haste. The boulevard connecting Breda Central Station to the city center functions as the city's 'welcome mat'. By placing poetry along the boulevard it illustrates Breda's new status as an international hub. The poetry provides glimpses into foreign cultures and resembles the scribblings and scrawls visitors especially are wont to leave behind. The medium references the global melting pot, of which Breda will soon be a part.
