In its present state the Kruisplein in Rotterdam is characterised by its lack of social interaction. The place doesn’t seem to support any collective form of behaviour, according to a mutually agreed set of rules. People avoid each other as much as possible, which results in segregation. The thesis project Kruisplein The Battle introduces the idea that design interventions might turn the place into an arena where social interaction is unavoidable. The aim is to provoke controlled exchange between the different groups through ritualised confrontation – much like groups of football supporters use flags, banners and shirts to play their own match on the stands of the stadium. Kruisplein The Battle connects this aspect of modern urban identity to local history. The historic location of the Rotterdam Zoo at the Kruisplein served as a starting point for an investigation of animal symbols and their role in ritual battle.
